The order in which the name of the candidates appear was determined by random draw and does not indicate appropriateness for election. The order differs from what was published in CreditLines.

You may vote for up to FIVE (5) candidates. Candidates receiving the five highest number of votes will be elected to the Board of Directors. Three (3) seats will carry a full three-year term, one (1) seat will carry a two-year term, and one (1) seat will carry a one-year term. Nominees with the greatest number of votes will serve the longest terms, provided that directors who are currently serving three consecutive terms will serve the shortest terms, beginning in March 2023.
 
Mark Yamakawa
Mark   Yamakawa HSFCU Experience: I have been a member for 26 years.

Education: ‘Iolani School; University of California, Berkeley, BS Industrial Engineering & Operations Research; University of Hawaii, Manoa, MBA Finance and Decision Science

Work Experience: I'm currently Senior Vice President at HMSA where our mission is to improve the lives and health of Hawai‘i families. Prior to HMSA, I served as President & CEO of Hawaii Dental Service (HDS) for 8 years and The Queen's Medical Center for nearly 30 years in various assignments with my last position as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

Board Qualifications: I'm grateful to have served as a Board member of Hawaii State FCU for the past 3 years. I also serve on other community organization boards that provide training, skills, and experience needed to be a good board member. I currently serve on the boards of Hawaii Pacific Health, ‘Iolani School, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, and St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii and previously served on the boards of American Heart Association-Hawaii, Child & Family Service, Kalihi-Palama Health Center, Lanakila (Rehab) Pacific Foundation, and Hospice Hawaii.

Primary Focus If Elected: I will serve the best interests of Hawaii State FCU and its members by providing guidance and perspectives in achieving strategic goals for growth, financial strength, and value to members. Hawaii State FCU is a significant financial institution in our community, and I will represent the organization to protect its fine reputation and service to its members.

Personal Statement: For 26 years, Hawaii State FCU has helped my family toward financial wellness. I would be humbled to continue serving Hawaii State FCU in appreciation for what it has done for me and the commitment to financial wellness for all its members.

 
Kaulana Park
Kaulana   Park HSFCU Experience: Member 12 years // Board of Director's 9 years, current Chairman and former Vice Chairman.

Education: Stanford University, BS Petroleum Engineering // Kamehameha Schools Kapalama.

Work Experience: Associate, Rider Levett Bucknall // SVP, Community Relations & Business Development Director, American Savings Bank // Chairman & Director, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands // Manager, Native Hawaiian Revolving Loan Fund & Evaluation & Research Department, Office of Hawaiian Affairs // Manager/VP, Bank of America Hawaii, First Hawaiian Bank, and Wells Fargo Bank.

Board Qualifications: I have extensive experience in lending, finance, budgets, marketing, human resources, and construction development. I have served on many non-profit boards and had the pleasure of being appointed for executive board positions.

Primary Focus If Elected: Post pandemic, the primary focus will be implementing and monitoring the directives from our Strategic Plan for growth and to meet members needs that include mobile banking or self-service options, mini/in-store branches, strategic branch placement, increasing member benefits, providing team members with a new professional/family work environment, and expanding our presence in the communities. Also, the financial literacy program will re-launch in 2023 with the caveat to make it fun while educating our members and families to attain their financial freedom.

Personal Statement: I have served nine (9) years and currently serve as your Board Chairman. It has been an honor working along and with your fellow Director's and the Executive Team. The Team accomplished some amazing things in 2022, to name a few: conducted the first Governance retreat with board, staff and Supervisory members that resulted in efficient streamlined Board meetings; re-set our strategic board direction; completed construction of our new HQ building; and ended the year as one of the largest financial institutions (total assets) in the state. And the best is yet to come. E holomua kakou.

 
Grant Tanimoto
Grant   Tanimoto HSFCU Experience: HSFCU member since 1979. Board Director for 9 years (Chair- 2 years, Vice-chair-2 years; Treasurer-3 years; served on every Board regular/special committee).

Education: McKinley High School; UH Manoa (BBA Finance); Santa Clara University Law School (JD).

Work Experience: Attorney (Private practice); 31 years Hawaii State public service (Campaign Spending Commission General Counsel; Hawaii Tax Department-Acting Director, Deputy Director, Rules Officer; Deputy Attorney General; Tour-Escort; Hotel-Clerk; Truck-Driver; Luau-worker; Dishwasher; Cannery worker; News-carrier. 2009 State Employee of the year, first runner-up.

Board Qualifications: I served for nine years as a volunteer director on your Board. This experience, insight, and knowledge has helped our credit union (e.g., new headquarters, products, and services; revised strategic plan; financial literacy program; record asset, loan, and member growth; increased scholarships; member and employee support). I help all credit unions by serving on the government affairs committee of the Hawaii Credit Union League. I am a member or past member of other community groups (Olelo Community Media, Club 200, Elks Club, Honolulu Neighborhood Commission Chair, Salt Lake Neighborhood Board Chair, PAL Lakeside Baseball Coordinator, Salt Lake Community Association President, PTA). I hope to continue helping members with these experiences and insights.

Primary Focus If Elected: I will work in the best interest of HSFCU member-owners to do what is always right by you. HSFCU must constantly innovate to deliver the best service, value, and benefits to members and assist members with making smarter financial decisions. I will provide an independent perspective (as a staffer and member of other boards, I understand the different roles). But I will work closely with the HSFCU ohana to lay the foundation for HSFCU and its members to thrive financially.

Personal Statement: HSFCU was founded on the philosophy of people helping people. This provides my guidance as I commit to serving as a good steward of our resources for current and future members.

 
Joshua Strickler
Joshua   Strickler HSFCU Experience: I have been a member of the credit union since 2009. I served on the Supervisory Committee from 2012 to 2019.

Education: I have a law degree and MBA from the University of Hawaii. I have a Mechanical Engineering degree from the Virginia Military Institute.

Work Experience: For the last 15 years I have focused on renewable energy development in Hawaii. I worked for the State of Hawaii from 2008 to 2012 with the Hawaii Energy Office and Public Utilities Commission. I was regulatory attorney with Hawaii Gas from 2012 to 2014. I was the Area General Manager for Johnson Controls from 2014 to 2020 where I managed over $500 million in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects for the University of Hawaii, City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii Department of Transportation, and several condominiums throughout Hawaii.

Board Qualifications: I am qualified to serve on the Board based on my legal and business background and my seven years of experience serving on the HSFCU Supervisory Committee. During that time I have learned a great deal about the operation and management of our credit union and how it serves my fellow members.

Primary Focus If Elected: If I am elected to the Board, my primary focus will be on the sustained ethical growth of the Hawaii State Federal Credit Union and member education.

Personal Statement: I am a proud member of the Hawaii State Federal Credit Union for the last 13 years. I have seen our credit union grow to become one of the largest financial institutions in Hawaii. The Board and Management must never forget that member satisfaction and trust are the key elements to this growth.

 
Dawn Kurisu
Dawn   Kurisu HSFCU Experience: I have been a member of HSFCU for 35 years and am committed to ensuring its success for future generations.

Education: Born in Hilo and raised on Oahu, I graduated high school from LaPietra, obtained a Bachelor's in Education from Chaminade University and a Master of Education from the University of Hawaii.

Work Experience: In my work as an elementary school teacher, school administrator, and non-profit executive focused on organizational strategy and community relations, I've worked collaboratively with community and government partners on initiatives and programs that effect positive change for individuals and families in Hawaii.

Board Qualifications: I am an experienced non-profit executive who is passionate about helping individuals and organizations in Hawaii thrive. I look forward to bringing a collaborative spirit and deep commitment to the people and community of HSFCU. I have served as a non-profit Board member and have worked closely with the Boards of the organizations that I served as a member of the executive team(s). I have also worked as a strategic planning and organizational consultant to nonprofit executives and Boards.

Primary Focus If Elected: If elected as a director, I would focus on listening to and learning from HSFCU's membership to ensure that we strive to always do right by you.

Personal Statement: Thank you for considering me as a candidate for the HSFCU Board of Directors. As someone who believes in the spirit of servant leadership, it is important to me to be a representative of the membership and greater community. Growing up with a single mom, I learned the values of hard work, integrity, and unconditional care. These are values I carry with me in my work and service.

 
Terrence Aratani
Terrence   Aratani HSFCU Experience: As a member for over 40 years, I am honored to serve as your board member for the past 9 years.

Education: I was fortunate that my parents emphasized education and I graduated from the following institutions:

Georgetown University Law Center-LL.M.

Work Experience: As the CEO for Ko‘olauloa Health Center for the past 8 years, I know the importance of my employees and the patients we serve. I can translate this knowledge and experience to our credit union employees and you as our member. The role management plays in keeping operations running smoothly with as little disruption as possible is always appreciated, and we saw our management and employee teams work through the most challenging time we will ever face, the COVID-19 pandemic. Each employee provided the best service possible to you and I thank them.

I worked in state government for over 25 years, culminating as the Chief of Staff for the Hawaii State Senate. This experience has taught me to pick the important problems and solve them.

Board Qualifications: As your board member, I served as Board Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. It was an honor to serve in these roles and I want to continue representing your interests.

Primary Focus If Elected: If you allow me to continue, I will work to provide the best benefits and services while continuing to maximize growth of both membership and assets. Following our mission statement, I will continue to do what is always right by you.
